Abstract

The article deals with the ontological essence of scientific style as one of the functional styles in the system of differentiation of functional styles. The article presents the basic directions of functional styles development in modern literary languages and reveals the prevailing traditions and new trends of functional stylistics emerged under the influence of modern linguistics. Particular attention is paid to the main linguistic and extralinguistic features of scientific style and its functional sub-styles system in modern literary languages. The author analyses the researchers’ approaches towards the problem of terminological distinction of the key notions: “style” and “discourse” / “scientific style” and “scientific discourse” in modern linguistics. The functional sub-styles system is presented through the prism of four main sub-styles: scientific proper, or academic substyle (thesis, abstract of thesis, monograph, article, report etc.); popular scientific sub-style that comprises articles in non-specialized magazines, essays used for propaganda of scientific and technical achievements among mass audience in easy, understandable, and interesting form; didactic sub-style (textbooks, study manuals, programmes, lectures, summaries); scientific and technical sub-style (manuals, patents, author's certificates etc.)
