Abstract

In the article three groups of functions that are characteristic of somaticon nominations in English-language fictional discourse have been analysed: ontological, instrumental and pragmatic groups. Every group combines several functions of the corresponding registry. The ontological group of functions is based on the specific nature of the somaticon components, in particular, on their ability to denote mental actions of a person (cognitive function); the subject of discursive activity (deictic function), as well as the content aspect of the communicative act (informational function). The instrumental one is aimed at establishing a connection between the non-verbal and verbal parts of the communicative act. The pragmatic one is connected with the purposeful transfer of information and the generation by means of somaticon of new discursive meanings.
