Abstract

The paper deals with the peculiarities of semantic derivation of irrational vocabulary – a semantic class of words that denote the human condition, developing on no rational basis, and grounding in no demands of reason, logic, opinion etc. The focus is made on the analysis of the models of irrational adjectival vocabulary semantic derivation in the Ukrainian, Polish and English languages, on the establishment of relations between the source and target meanings, on the ascertainment of semantic paradigm development dynamics of the given class of vocabulary in a contrastive aspect. The research concludes that in the process of semantic derivation the irrational adjectival vocabulary reveals the features of a situation type derivation that is realized in the aspect of participant characteristics changes. It has been established that the strategies of the irrational adjectival vocabulary semantic derivation in the contrasted languages reveal the extension of a situation concept based on the models of actantial and implicative derivational relations. The analysis of the irrational adjectival vocabulary semantic paradigm development dynamics showed that the differences in the extension of the irrational state situation concept in the contrasted languages depends on the stability of relations between the source and target situations.
